Founded in March 2017, Montréal Antifasciste is a collective that has been resisting the rise of the far right in Québec since its inception. Over the past three years, we’ve organized or co-organized antifascist and anti-racist demonstrations and counter-demonstrations, produced and disseminated information, analysis, and resources about key far-right groups and individuals in Québec (and how to fight them), engaged in postering and stickering campaigns in Montréal, organized transportation for antifascist events outside of Montréal, and created workshops and informational materials about the far right in Québec. We also have a website (http://montreal-antifasciste.info), as well as a Facebook page and Mastodon et BlueSky accounts.

Although we’d like to have done even more and are well aware of the opportunities we’ve missed, the projects we haven’t been able to sustain over the long term, and the goals we haven’t achieved, we do feel we’ve done some important work over the past eight years:

  1. We’ve produced numerous exposés, conducted extensive research, and provided a detailed analysis of the far right in Québec on our website, in workshops, and with leaflets and pamphlets, in an effort to counter the influence of “fake news” and to shed light on the far right’s political ideology and the links and tensions between far-right groups.
  2. We’ve provided groups and individuals targeted by the far right with information about what’s going on “behind the scenes.”
  3. We’ve actively participated in numerous solidarity events and mobilizations alongside communities directly targeted by the far right.
  4. We’ve organized counter-demonstrations to confront far-right groups when they’ve attempted to establish a presence in Montréal;
  5. We’ve provided security at events targeted by far-right trolls.
  6. We’ve mobilized support for anti-racists and anti-fascists in other cities and regions of Québec.

Conditions being what they are in a capitalist society, all of this costs something. To continue doing what we’re doing, we need funding: we receive no grants from foundations or the government and haven’t yet received the mythical checks from George Soros.
