Mapping out the Far Right

Alt-Right

The term “alt-right,” or “alternative right,” designates a far-right movement that developed over the last decade, first in the United States, then in most English-speaking countries and onward throughout Europe, an expansion that primarily (if not entirely) took the form of prolific internet activity. The alt-right movement (which could be described as a “big tent,” bringing together a number of distinct tendencies) gained visibility in 2016, primarily for its support for Donald Trump’s candidacy for President of the United States. Since the 2016 election, and faced with a large antifascist opposition in North America, the alt-right has lost a lot of ground and much of its legitimacy, in no small part due to the complete fiasco that the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017, turned out to be.>>>

Atalante

Atalante is a neo-fascist, “third positionist” group created in 2016 in Québec City by members and acolytes of RAC band Légitime Violence and Québec City’s counter-cultural bonehead scene (Québec Stompers Crew). The creation of Atalante reflects the neo-fascist boneheads‘ ambition to deploy a political arm and further normalize its toxic ideas. >>>

Canadian Coalition of Concerned Citizens (C4)

The Canadian Coalition of Concerned Citizens (C4), although in principle considers itself a federal group, has its sole declared leader, Georges Hallak, based in Montreal. Although the group does not regularly organize activities, its Facebook page has 8,800 followers.>>>

Far-Right Vloggers

In recent years, particularly with the influence of the U.S. alt-right, the far right has effectively adopted the main contemporary forms of alternative communication, i.e., social media, podcasts, and vlog channels. In Québec, one of the most important populist-nationalist vlogs is that of André “Stu Pitt” Pitre, who, under the pretext of defending freedom of expression, provides a vehicle for Québec’s main far-right groups to promote their noxious ideas. Other projects—e.g., DMS—are means for diffusing reactionary, and at times explicitly hateful and / or antisemitic, positions. “Goy” George Tremblay provides another similar example. >>>

Fédération des Québécois de souche

One of the main right-wing groups in Quebec preceding La Meute is the “Fédération des Québécois de Souche (FQS)”, which describes itself as a “nationalist political organization focusing on ending political correctness”.>>>

Horizon Québec Actuel

Horizon Québec Actuel was formed in 2016, in the wake of Pierre Karl Péladeau’s resignation as leader of the Parti Québécois and shortly following a meeting between three PQ members and Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s Front National. The organization, effectively an FN satellite in Québec, established a public presence in May 2017, when its president, Alexandre Cormier-Denis, ran for the Parti indépendantiste in the Gouin by-election in Montréal, conducting an extremely Islamophobic campaign. >>>

Mouvement républicain du Québec

The Mouvement républicain du Québec is a self-styled “non-partisan group” that promotes the political, economic, and cultural “rights of Quebecers,” by whom it means “pure laine” Québecers. This is a nationalist group enthralled with les Patriotes, whose flag has been co-opted by the ultranationalist far-right in Quebec. The rather tame self-presentation on their website hides the xenophobia/ Islamophobia of their organization and its members. The group also peddles antisemitic conspiracy theories in its Facebook group, which has almost 2,500 members. >>>

Soldiers of Odin Québec

The Soldiers of Odin–Québec is a white supremacist, xenophobic, and Islamophobic identitarian group primarily active in Montréal, with a couple of dozen members and sympathizers elsewhere in Québec. There primary raison d’être and the core of their practice is conducting patrols in working-class neighbourhoods to “protect” the local population from an imagined radical Islamic threat. >>>

Storm Alliance

The Storm Alliance is an anti-immigrant organization that has been active in Quebec since 2016, when it broke off from the Soldiers of Odin, a more openly racist group. Until recently, Storm Alliance was led by former Soldiers of Odin leader Dave Tregget, who was always clear that his goal is to unite the far right, while softening its image. In January 2018, Tregget stepped down following allegations of sexual harassment; his replacement at the head of the organization is Éric Trudel. >>>

The Proud Boys

The Proud Boys were formed in 2016 by former co-founder of Vice magazine Gavin McInnis. While McInnis is fond of describing the Proud Boys as a men’s drinking club, it is a virulent racist, sexist, transphobic, antisemitic, Islamophobic, anti-immigrant alt-right organization. Members of the organization, including McInnis himself, were involved in a series of violent confrontations with antifascists in the first four months of 2017. In April 2017, they institutionalized their violence by forming a paramilitary unit called the Fraternal Order of the Alt Knights, under the leadership of a notorious alt-right thug, Kyle “Based Stickman” Chapman. On July 1, 2017, Proud Boys disrupted an indigenous protest ceremony in Halifax. >>>

The Three Percenters (III%)

The Three Percenters are a right-wing militia that require individuals to hold a firearms license in order to become members. The Quebec Three Percenters wish to defend Quebec against a possible invasion of the Islamic State and advocate for the end of non-white immigration. >>>
